After last years landmark conference in Copenhagen, Denmark on Climate Change the nations of the world are still trying to come to an agreement to sustain the world’s climate. This year’s sixteenth session of the Conference of Parties (COP16) and the sixth session of the Conference of Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (CMP6) to the Kyoto Protocol will be held in Cancún, Mexico at the Moon Palace Hotel and the Cancun Messe from November 29 through December 10. Luckily for the delegates of the countries and NGO’s attending this years meeting has not been hyped up as much by the media as last years and it is thus hoped that the conference will be more successful.
For the second time TYN will be sending a delegation to a COP/CMP meeting. The members of the delegation are expected to have an understanding of the process of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) including its structure. Of course, during the conference this understanding will be expanded and delegates will learn much about diplomacy in a UN context. The delegation will mainly be assisting the Youth Caucus at the conference (the YOUNGO constituency) and help YOUNGO achieve their goals at this years conference.
Applications for this conference will open mid-July and five to ten candidates will be chosen to become delegation members in September. After this an intense preparation phase will start during which the delegates will gain a thorough understanding of both the workings of the UNFCCC and YOUNGO. A more specific focus will then be created for each delegate taking into consideration their specific interest and the needs of the delegation and YOUNGO.
In the last weekend of November the Conference of Youth (CoY) will take place in Cancún and the Monday after COP16 starts. It is important for delegates to attend the Conference of Youth as it allows people to find their place in YOUNGO. The next two weeks will be dominated by intense but rewarding work.
Applications are now closed and our delegation will soon be announced here!
